01_Artist statement
Lena Paßlick (b. 1995 in West Germany) is a visual artist who lives and works in The Netherlands. Her practice is an ongoing photographic essay where she utilizes her romanticized perception of the past to construct an anonymized elsewhere. Paßlick’s visual language is influenced by historical assumptions found in the media, family archives, or her Heimat Germany. Her practice is shaped by an intuitive approach to image-making with special attention to authenticity and the insignificance of habits and environments.
Lena is aware that her perception of the past is merely an assumption. As a result, her work can be viewed in the context of ‘false nostalgia’, a term that alludes to the idea that one can yearn for a past that one never witnessed and, therefore, never existed. A sense of displacement in modern pop culture is one of the underlying reasons for this flight to the past and provides photographic grounds for reflection.
